WooJin Shin and Daniel Salamanca make plans for their exhibition at 4^th Ward Project Space across the chasm of time and space between Chicago, IL and Bogota, Colombia. Their discussions focus on the desert, but this line is dry. An oasis, perhaps, but this thought drowns in its overtness. In between the desert and the oasis they find relief from the concrete. They conjure and spy what seems like material certainty, but such sureness quickly reveals itself to be mere illusion. Alas, they have come to the fabled, desert mirage, and in this shifting and unstable site, Shin and Salamanca find the ideal environment to codify their exhibition. Here, their artistic practices seek to root themselves in the pursuit of higher notions, even as they undermine these potential and ideal realities.

Mirage appears to be an exhibition of paintings, projections, and on-site interventions. Upon approach, these discrete  practices merge, recede, and give way to collective searching and uncertainty.

WooJin Shin is a Korean artist who lives and works in Chicago, IL. He received his BFA (2017) and MFA (2019) from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. He is a founder of Jowol gallery in JeonJu, South Korea, and a member of carbon copy collective.

Daniel Salamanca is a visual artist from Bogotá, Colombia. He received his BFA (2006) from Javeriana University and MFA in Painting and Drawing (2019) from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. He has exhibited his work across Latin America, Europe, and Chicago, IL. Most recently, his work was curated by Krist Gruijthuijsen (Netherlands) for Referentes section at ARTBO International Fair. He was artist in residence at Terra Una in Minas Gerais, Brazil, and he is a member of carbon copy collective.
